Abbots Langley Gilbert & Sullivan Society Celebrating over 50 years
of fun and entertainment

The Girl Next Door

This show was performed at the Henderson Hall, Abbots Langley from July 2nd to 5th. Played to packed and appreciative houses the show has already received many glowing tributes and comments such as "Why have we had to wait 50 years for this show to be performed again?".  It's success has been beyond expectations and everyone has gone home singing some of the very catchy songs to themselves. Great credit for this has to go to the directors Andrew Taylor and Brenda Southorn as well as authors and cast !

The Girl Next Door was last performed in 1956 and was written by Abbots Langley's very own Alan Vening in conjunction with the now-distinguished TV comedy scriptwriter  Peter Vincent.
Our direction team of members Brenda Southorn and Andrew Taylor ensured the production retained the strong and distinctive local flavour on which ALGSS prides itself. The Watford Observer from 27th May carried this article  previewing the show.

The Girl Next Door was first performed by the Cambridge Footlights and, intriguingly, centres around a village carnival at which a lost Gilbert & Sullivan opera is to be performed !!  It was absolutely perfect material for ALGSS and ALFA !

The May edition of The Villager carried this article  which gives a further insight on rehearsals for the show.

More background on our production can be read in the Spring edition of the NODA London magazine - click here  to see the article.

A fascinating interview with co-writer Peter Vincent has just been published in a recent London NODA magazine article .  Enjoy reading about how Peter goes about the difficult art of comedy-writing !
