Trial by Jury HMS Pinafore

Watford Palace Theatre
17 January 2010

Directed by Clive Bebee
Musical Direction by Peter Jones

Trial by Jury was Gilbert and Sullivan's first real 'hit'. First performed as an accompanying piece to Offenbach's La Périchole, the story draws on Gilbert's experience as a lawyer has he pokes fun at the judicial system as the plaintiff sues for 'breach of promise' to marry. The Sorcerer that followed Trial was a success by the standards of the day, but it was HMS Pinafore that turned Gilbert and Sullivan into an international phenomenon that has not abaited to this day! ALGSS perform these two pieces together for a hugely entertaining evening. We welcome back the successful duo of Clive Bebee as director and Peter Jones, musical director who last worked together for us on our 2006 production of the Pirates of Penzance.
